The Citizens by L. M. Smith is a unique and creative story about five unrelated people--two men, two women, and a young girl--who each wake up at some point to find themselves in a deserted ghost town being monitored by shadowy and powerful enemies. There's no real sense of what they are supposed to do or why these particular five have been chosen, and part of the fun of the book is to try to figure out those mysteries. As time passes, the five individuals begin to change in ways that are startling and extraordinary. The underlying premise is similar to The Maze Runner with the characters trying to decipher and escape from their new realty; The Citizens, however, is told at a much more leisurely pace. There are also elements of the Lost series with a mysterious set of "Others" watching and manipulating the new arrivals.

Readers, kept in the dark along with the five Citizens, will keep turning the pages to find out how this compelling story ends. Some of the questions are answered, but more are enticingly left to be resolved in the next book in the series.

The Citizens A Jazz Nemesis Novel Book 1 edition by L M Smith Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This story wasn’t particularly interesting to me. It’s a good concept but it was pretty boring and it was written in a way that I really couldn’t identify with the characters. Nothing of significance was happening. The only excitement was when Jazz and Beck found those scissors but that ended up quickly.

Beck was this tough army guy at the beginning but half way through he was portrayed as this sensitive crying guy that I was having a hard time believing. Jazz turned from a nice shy girl to a b*tch, Piper turned into something else that I can’t say or I’ll spoil it for you and the other two it’s like they weren’t even there.

There was finally some action at the end but it was very random and without any plan which turned out into some mess. Interesting how the book ended and gave a clue for the sequel but I hope it’s not going to be another retelling of meaningless tasks.
THE CITIZENS is absolutely the kind of book I don’t like and refuse to read. I kept refusing to read it all night long, trying to finish before morning. Hummmph! These characters forced me to endure their daily boredom while held captive. And then their tension (and mine) started to build to the crescendo ending. I’m so un-enamored of books of this genre that I hurriedly purchased the sequel, THE REFUGEES. This one dragged me straight into their changed world and started revealing what had really happened to them. More and more tension. These characters took on a life of their own. I finally had to put down the book because I had reached its end, dagnabit.
I absolutely loved this novel! It had me captive from the very beginning until the exciting end. Speaking of captive, that's just what these five well developed and interesting characters of the book are. They each wake up to find themselves in a very strange little small town called Kolob. They have no idea how they got there, or why they are there, but they soon learn that their every movement is being somehow closely watched. After an attempt at trying to walk out of town, they quickly realize, if they want to stay alive, that that isn't an option. At first things aren't so bad. They have everything they need, except answers to their many questions, but L. M. Smith does a great job keeping you guessing what might happen next. Her talent for writing is very obvious in this novel. There were a few typing mistakes, but only a very few and they didn't bother me in the least because the story is so good. This book had everything I love in a novel. I couldn't wait to get to the end to find out why these unfortunate characters had to go through everything they went through. This novel screams for a sequel! I highly recommend it.
Before I praise this fascinating book, I have to mention the typos that make me nuts in e-books. Things like "roll" instead of "role" (and vice versa)
make me nuts. And I'd take out a few references to Jasmine being a "Scorpio." It's unnecessary, and makes the reader go off track for a moment. That said, this book was better edited than most e-books.

Now for the positives As a writer and voracious reader, I was wowed by this imaginative book. The characters were incredibly well-drawn -- and unusual -- and the plot moved at a pace that was perfect for this post-apocalyptic (maybe) tale. It's rare that I read anything in one sitting, but I couldn't put it down.

To be one of five people who unexpectedly wake up in a town that appears to be a 1950s TV show set is just the beginning. The characters have no idea where they are or how they arrived, and they're each equipped with an ankle-monitoring device. How they figure out to cope with this situation is the meat of this book. The main character's (Jasmine's) actions are particularly fascinating; I can't recall a female protagonist who's so different, but so real.

To those who mention werewolves and/or other monsters that become central to the plot, I'd not even think about that until finishing the book. The interactions between the five are central as to how the story develops. And I loved being surprised at the end; I certainly made several guesses as to what was happening, but I wrong on all counts. (And I figured out what was happening in "The Sixth Sense" film 10 minutes into the movie. LOL.)

I can't say enough about how well-drawn the characters were written. There's Jasmine, the 30-something loner; Beck, the gentle military man; Gordon, an unpleasant and somewhat mysterious salesman; Kaori, an obnoxious, runaway teenager; and Piper, a British wife and mother in her 40s. To throw these five in a place that could be hidden in America, or on another planet and see how they survive is a wild ride.

Kudos to the author for the very last line of the book. Good way to have readers dying to read the next "adventure."

What a wonderful surprise to randomly start reading this and find myself totally immersed in another -- but possible -- world. Can't wait to read more from this author.
