Marlene Sternberg's 42-year-old bachelor son, Robbie, who lives and works hundreds of miles away, fails to call her on her 70th birthday. Several days later she gets a mysterious package from him and before she can open it, he phones and drops a bombshell. He's no longer her son -- he's had a sex-change operation and he's now her daughter. Marlene realizes that her husband, Henry, although a devoted father, is also a conservative old-fashioned guy who will be out of his mind when he gets the news. Why did Robbie have to keep his surgery secret until after the fact? Why was Marlene's younger child, 37-year-old daughter Linda, instrumental in financing the operation? Suddenly Marlene's everyday obsessions take a back seat to the new family dynamics. No longer is her biggest problem her thirty pounds of excess weight or even the fact that tightwad Henry won't pay for the facelift she desires. Will Henry try to close the door on his relationship with Robbie? What should Marlene advise her new transgendered daughter to do about Robbie's earlier commitment to stand up as a groomsman for wealthy cousin Cissy's imminent lavish wedding, since none of the extended family knows about the operation? As the weeks pass, Marlene sees the possibility that the harrowing upset to the family relationships can be normalized if only Henry is given time to adjust. Will her maternal instincts and love for her two children overcome all the new obstacles facing her?

Lea Becker's treatment of a sensitive subject is written with empathy and humor. This fictional tale about a family with a dilemma is a story that could be true and could be playing out right now in your neighborhood or your own home.

I am not easily impressed by books. Nine-tenths of all books I have read bore me to tears, as I'm an artist, a very visual person who loves to work with my hands. This book was recommended to me as a 'fun read,' and I needed something to entertain me while traveling over the Fourth of July weekend. After reading the first paragraph, I was hooked. The character development of the various family members was very strongly delineated -- the strong Jewish mother who was frustrated by her two grown children's lack of communication and her ubiquitous dieting issues, the well-meaning but seemingly indifferent and mildly insensitive husband who was a traditionalist to the core and overly worried about money, and the son and daughter who were very close, but whose separate neuroses troubled both parents who knew that they were not likely to ever be grandparents. Very early in the book, the fact of Robbie's operation from a man to a woman is introduced through a phone conversation with his mother, and the story was a gradual evolution of how his parents went from utter disbelief and dismay to understanding, love and admiration. His father, in particular, was in avoidance, but the book beautifully crafted his 'unthawing.' The fact that Robbie/Robin had become a very successful sculptor from a car mechanic added great interest. It brought out the fact that art was Robbie/Robin's salvation and enabled him/her to express honest emotions through 3-dimensional materials. It gave him/her self-esteem that he/she might not have had otherwise. From this standpoint, he/she was very fortunate. This would be an excellent book to read for all parents and family members who may be trying to understand their loved one who was not comfortable with the sex they were given at birth. It will help them to not blame themselves for person's desire to change, as it generally has nothing to do with the family members personally. I truly feel that this poignant, funny, and informative book should be made into a movie. Many people would benefit and it would be a gift to the transgender community.

This is a very sweet and funny book!! Not having any personal experience with the subject matter (sex change operations, and the effect they have on the other family members), I still REALLY could relate to this story!!! The main character, Marlene, has a way of sharing her inner life and her outer life at the same time that rings true to life. That's what I found so amusing about this story.
I received this book as a gift from my nephew (he knows LHB is one of my favorite writers!) this past Monday night and finished reading it on Tuesday. Unlike the other books written by Ms. Becker, this one is fiction. And it's a hoot!!! That's all I can tell you without giving too much away. I definitely recommend it, especially if you're already a fan of this author's work.
A different take on the challenges of the transsexual experience, this time from the viewpoint of a senior Jewish mother in Florida. Although I would have liked to have experienced more of the viewpoint of the son-to-daughter, this novel opens the way for varied perspectives on this life-changing experience.
A wonderful, funny, poignant book about a very current topic. There's lots of information available about the Transgender experience (even a cover story in Time Magazine), but this work of humorous fiction tells the story totally from the point of view of a very funny Jewish mother finding out about her son (who is now her daughter). The circumstances are unique, but the tender, loving attempt of an old-fashioned woman to understand her "thoroughly modern" offspring is delightful. I highly recommend this book, and I hope that someone realizes that it would make a great movie!

Lea Becker has written a story that any parent approaching a milestone birthday (in this case, a mother approaching 70 years of age) can appreciate and identify with. Parents of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender children will really appreciate the diverse pearls of wisdom about understanding inside this fictional account. Lea’s character tells, as if it were non-fiction, how a parent who is surprised when their trans child comes out learns what this means - by looking it up on the Internet and reading books about the subject. Looking around her at her possibly dysfunctional extended family and comparing it to her immediate family’s complex issues brings the mother back to realizing how functional and supportive her immediate family really is. Well said! Well written! And Lea’s book shows a family about as close to happily-ever-after as any family of a trans child can be.
The story covers mostly the parents reaction to Robbie's transition, especially the mother. I tired quickly of the mother complaining it was her problem. What the son went thru seemed unimportant. I admit my family abused me and fought against transitioning. Sorry, maybe I see some of what my family inflicted on me leaving me in pain.
One of the best writers I've come across! Very unique story and beautifully written. Lea Hope Becker's natural wit and wonderful sense of humor overflow into a rapid page turning one of a kind experience!!!!!!!! Great job!
