Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus by Orson Scott Card (first published in 1996) is a complex story about scientists/researchers, Christopher Columbus, and alternate history. The researchers were part of the Pastwatch project, which enabled them to witness and study any time and place in the history of the world. At first the images provided only fleeting glimpses that lacked detail and sound. However, the continued development of the Pastwatch technology, enabled the researchers to clearly view, hear, and record events and/or individual conversations that interested them. For many years the researchers were limited to voyeurism, i.e., they could not communicate with their subjects. However, new technology eventually provided the ability to communicate with historical subjects. Of course that ability also provided opportunities to affect the events of the past, which provided the possibility of changing history, and therefore changing the present as well. Tagiri and Hassan lead the Columbus project within the Pastwatch organization. They were concerned about the way European explorers/invaders (mostly from Spain) raped, murdered and took native peoples from the new world back to Spain where they were forced to live as slaves. The Columbus project was established to try to use the Pastwatch technology to eliminate that exploitation and torture by the Spaniards. The researchers believed that the best way to accomplish this was to either stop Columbus from sailing west to the new world or change his attitudes about native peoples and slavery. After many years, Tagiri and Hassan's daughter, Diko, became the leader of this effort and the evolved technology enabled the Pastwatch researchers to physically travel back in time to impact history. In addition to their concerns about physical violence toward the people in the past and the slavery of those people, the researchers were also concerned about a crumbling ecosystem and society in the present. Changing the actions of Columbus was seen as the key to preventing the slavery and possibly avoiding ecological and societal catastrophe in the present. This book takes the reader back and forth from the Pastwatch researchers in the present to Columbus and his contemporaries. It also enlightens the reader about the development of societies in Haiti and surrounds. It provides a very interesting account of the life of Columbus and the society in which he lived. Diko and her team journey back in time and endure much loss and hardship to create an alternate history. The pivotal role of Columbus regarding the alternate world history is very well developed and fascinating. I found this book to be a first-rate and very enjoyable time-travel and alternate-history tale.

This is one of my favorite books ranking in the top 5 and that's saying something because I have read about 4000 books (not including magazines, newspapers, etc.) in 22 years. I love the books by this author. He also wrote Ender's Game, another excellent book. The great thing about this book is that it is about time viewing and time traveling. It presents the story in a very fresh original way. And while reading the book it presents some very interesting ideas that get you thinking. The only thing I don't like about this book is that the author tends to throw in one or two stories (within the story) that present actual biblical accounts as naturally occurring myths. However, I still highly recommend this book to anyone who loves sci-fi or time travel. Awesome book, creative author. Unparalleled story plot.
Just finished this book and I feel like I am waking up; that's how engrossing it is. This is alternative history taken to the next level in every aspect. Whereas a typical Turtledove novel examines alternative timelines in a notable era with a narrow and salacious mix of elements which remain firmly fixed to reality and technology, Card takes the genre to the next level. A healthy mix of fantasy bridges improbable gaps and allows the author to examine the larger concepts like history, morality, and civilization while using regular characters. Somehow Card renders a verdict on various cultures (Mayan, Aztec, Islamic, Christian, European) and suggests a new route to salvation for the villians of history. This results in a dense but readable novel which flows like silk. The end result is a new solution, a new birth of freedom as Lincoln might say. An appropriately priced novel.
Pastwatch has good and bad things going for it, and I will attempt to summarize them without spoiling things for a potential reader.

Con While I love some of Card's novels, this one did not engage me in the same fashion, and while thought provoking, it just seemed slow and listless compared to some of his other books. The characters seemed not only distant and removed from each other, but from the readers. Romance, when it occurred, felt forced.

Pros As a sci-fi fan, I love tampering with the time stream. This is the first time I can recall wondering what happens if you *don't* tamper with it, and Card has some unexpected ideas on that front. I really enjoyed learning more about Columbus (no idea if it was at all accurate, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt), and the Mesoamerican civilizations were fascinating as well.

On the whole, I enjoyed it, but I don't think I would encourage others to put it at the top of their book piles.
I couldn't put this book down - I was recovering from a week in the hospital, so I had the time to read it nonstop. The portrayal of Columbus is fascinating - the whole thing seemed to play like a movie in my head as I read it. I love books that do that. This was a view of exploration from the explorer's point of view - the hopes, the struggles, the rivalries, the failures, and the failures of success. It also showed how good analysts do their job - paying attention to detail. These depictions are so good that I bought a copy of this book for my granddaughter's 11th birthday. I hope she reads it.

As Rodriguez's music did for Afrikaaners in apartheid South Africa, it suggests "there's another way to think about this" where "this" can be anything that seems immutable and wrong. In the end, this book left me with the message, "everyone should be trying to find a way to make the world a better place to live in."
