When a courageous, stubborn nurse and an equally stubborn firefighter get together, you know sparks are gonna fly like you wouldn't believe. That's exactly what happens at Pacific Mercy Hospital between fire captain Scott McKenna and charge nurse Erin Quinn. Both are determined to serve the area's people, heal patients, and deal with a recent environmental disaster to the best of their ability. However, their strong personalities keep getting in the way, until they unite over the people they love.

Erin and Scott are both strong, well-drawn characters with great arcs and spiritual journeys. Both of them have to learn that they are not responsible for everything, can't save everyone, and can't run from their problems. Even though both are Christians, they have to relearn, to an extent, what it looks like to trust and follow God. The spiritual journey is done realistically, with no preaching and plenty of grit to keep things interesting. I especially liked Candace's symbolism of Erin's old Wonder Woman costume/persona and her battle with her bathroom's stubborn mold.

Actually though, the secondary characters may make this book just as good, if not more so, than our main protagonists. Cody, Scott's nephew, was injured in a car accident that killed his parents and stands to lose his leg. He's a brave kid, but never pathetic or too sweet--he's just your average ten-year-old making the best of a bad situation. Erin's grandmother Iris, or Nana, is both a fun and wise woman with unique traits and a true passion for her volunteer work at Pacific Mercy. Sarge--well, I can't say much without giving too much away. Let's just say he's a sympathetic character without being entirely likable, and drives home the fact that veterans are real people with real needs and battles to fight even at home.

The environmental subplot is pretty good, though I felt the community's reaction was overblown at times. That said, it did get and keep my attention. There's a scene where a little girl loses her cat to the spill--it just about ripped my heart out. That kind of thing really made me root for Scott and Erin's efforts to help and heal. Overall, I'm glad I checked into Pacific Mercy.

Disaster Status Mercy Hospital Book 2 Candace Calvert 9781414325446 Books Reviews

This is a masterful piece of writing. I am a HUGE fan of Candace Calvert's work and this book was amazing. It had such a suspenseful feel to it, and I wasn't disappointed. I love how her books are faith based and all of them carry a message. The message that spoke to me in this book was that you have to have faith, forgive, and forget. God has a plan for us all, we just have to stop and listen.

My heart went out to Sarge. There are many veterans that suffer from similar problems.

I can't get enough of Candace Calvert's books. I'm excited, and sad to read the next book. Sad because it's the final book in this series. I've read the first two books in her other series and can't wait to read the next book she has coming out in March. Just when I don't think I could possibly become more amazed by Candace's writing, she proves me wrong. I've said it before and I will say it again, thank you, Candace Calvert, for sharing your work. You're an incredibly talented writer and it's a blessing to read your work.

I recently found myself in the unenviable position of being way behind on my Calvert reading. Quickly remedied by downloading Disaster Status to my , I was shortly on the mend. And what better mend to be on than with this story?

Second in the "Mercy Hospital" series, Disaster Status steps away from its prequel, Critical Care, in theme and intensity, but not in quality. Okay, maybe in quality, too, for as the theme and the tension wratchet up, so does Ms. Calvert's storytelling.

The story follows Erin Quinn home to California where she resumes her career as an ER charge nurse and her life as a care-giver for her widowed grandmother. Erin carries family baggage that encases her heart and her mind away from all, including herself. Her job and her grandmother are all the life she needs. At least she thinks so...

The story hits the ground running with a major disaster involving a chemical spill. The emergency situation is eventually resolved, but it leaves an undetected undercurrent in its wake that will resurface in a most unexpected way. During the course of the incident, Erin collides repeatedly with fire Capt. Scott McKenna, a by-the-book, self-driven, overachiever who also carries family baggage living in the shadows of a herioc father and with the shadows of a self-perceived failure to protect those he loved the most. His job and...well, his job is all he needs. At least, he thinks so...

Thrown together whether they like it or not, oil and water seem better suited to each other than Erin and Scott, at least at first. But as concern for others around them force their attention away from their own hang-ups, a curious bond begins to develop that neither of them wants or understands. It isn't until a shocking crisis explodes onto the scene do they see themselves and each other for who they really are.

Ms. Calvert doesn't skim the surface of our sensibilities as so many romances do. She dares to bring in a dark element, something sinister, that threatens everyone in the story either directly or indirectly. There is an evil afoot that you're not quite sure what to make of throughout the tale, something you even find yourself pondering after closing of the novel's back cover.

Tightly written, heartwarming, inspiring, and thought provoking, Disaster Status is a great read. Something a little different, something a little daring. Bravo to Ms. Calvert for daring to be different, and for doing it so well.
